Training at CrossFit Refinery

CrossFit Refinery first and foremost is a CrossFit gym! CrossFit gyms run group based fitness classes that are instructed by a qualified instructor. At CrossFit Refinery, we run group classes almost every hour of the day. Each class has a specific warm-up a strength element and then a metabolic conditioning block. Warm-Ups are often overlooked or rushed through by a lot of gyms but here at CrossFit Refinery we spend a lot of time developing warm ups that are specific to the movements that we practicing that day. Not only are our warm-ups designed to prepare you for your class, we also mix in a lot of functional body-building and core strength each day.

Our Strength Elements are a major part of our programming. That’s because we run specific strength cycles in our regular CrossFit classes! Basically, you’ll have 3-12 weeks blocks of time where you’ll be moving towards a new goal of some new maximum lift or movement. In addition to putting our strength elements into a structured curriculum you’ll see patterns in our Metabolic Conditioning pieces every few weeks as well. You’ll always know that you’re programming is thought-out well in advance.

About Us

CrossFit Refinery was founded in 2008 by two brothers who operated the gym together for many years. CrossFit Refinery was an active member of the CrossFit Games circuit and even made it to the CrossFit Games in 2010. Since then, CrossFit Refinery has been the home of a dedicated crew of CrossFitters, many of whom have been at the gym for almost a decade. CrossFit supplements our members’ active lifestyles and allows them continue to run 50ks or ski and snowboard or mountain bike throughout Boise. Like many gyms that were founded early on in the CrossFit lifecycle, CrossFit Refinery followed the Workout of the Day (WoD) posted by CrossFit HQ.

In early 2017 the two brothers sold CrossFit Refinery and some new coaches and programming came in. Currently, the upper room of CrossFit Refinery is called simply “The Refinery” and we have a very strong team of personal trainers that operate out of our upstairs facility. They service a wide range of clients and offer expertise in a myriad of disciplines. The Refinery boasts thousands of pounds of bumper plates, numerous power racks, Rogue Fitness rigs and hundreds of kettlebells and dumbbells. While all of our trainers are able to train their clients using cable machines we believe at The Refinery that our experience and expertise allows us to work with all our clients without leaning on too many machines. We strive to make our clients’ lives better through refined fitness.

The downstairs room is devoted to our amazing CrossFit community. Head trainer, Basile Beaty, began transferring his system of training to the CrossFit Refinery community in mid-February 2017. This was the fourth gym that Basile has transitioned into his system and within only a few months 100% of the gym was hitting new PRs on major lifts. Isaac Campbell

Isaac moved to Boise from Alaska to train with the Verdant CrossFit crew. Within a year he had dramatically PR’d all his lifts. Soon after he started coaching at Verdant CrossFit and CrossFit Refinery. In 2016, Isaac decided to pursue Olympic Weightlifting competitively and he walked away from the year with a very long list of accomplishments, in addition to winning various local USAW meets he qualified for University and Under 25 Nationals in New Orleans in September 2016. He also qualified for the 2016 American Open Championship in Orlando. He currently holds all the male 85kg Idaho State Records and was the 2016 Idaho 85kg state champion and the overall Sinclair Champion. He currently coaches at Refinery and Verdant and is pursuing a career in the United States Air Force.

John Baranco

John is a local golf legend, born here in Boise, Idaho. Before starting CrossFit in 2015, he was an incredibly accomplished local and national golfer. John was a 4 year scholar-athlete in Golf at Boise State University and was made captain his senior year and qualified as an Academic All-WAC athlete. After BSU he qualified for U.S.G.A. U.S. Public Links and two time U.S. Mid-Amateur, and qualified for the sectional qualifying round for the U.S. Open. Since beginning coaching at Verdant, John has eaten up all the literature he has been given and has tirelessly applied himself to the nuances of olympic lifting and CrossFit development programming. He has competed in a several USAW sanctioned meets as well as local CrossFit competitions. He currently is working toward becoming a sheriff in Canyon County and he and his awesome wife are expecting their first child soon!

Joey Brinton

Joey moved to Boise to join his long time girlfriend at Boise State University. He is currently working on a degree in Exercise Science. As a coach, Joey is incredibly attentive and has a unique understanding of biomechanics and is able to identify issues in an athlete’s movement. Joey played junior-collegiate basketball at MoorPark College for X years. Joey has coached CrossFit for 5 years and has coached at a number of our friend’s gyms in SoCal. In 2016 he was on Precision CrossFit’s Regional team in the SoCal region and was on Verdant’s team in 2017. As an athlete Joey has progressed each year and is an incredible CrossFitter while balancing school, coaching, and working at LuluLemon.

Sierra Bell

Sierra has been training under the Verdant system for over two years. She came in as an incredibly gifted young athlete who played competitive volleyball and soccer. She is an inspiring trainer and athlete who works in The Refinery Personal Training Studio as well as at Verdant CrossFit. She completed her NASM certification in June of 2016 and her degree in psychology at BSU in 2017. Sierra is incredibly well-versed in our methods and has been an integral part of our community for years.

Crystal Parks

Crystal has been an athlete under the Verdant system for almost 3 years. She played volleyball at Moorpark College from 2013 to 2015, coached the Westlake Volleyball Club from 2014-2015, coached soccer and volleyball at Grace Brethren Elementary 2012-2015, and in 2015 enrolled at BSU. She is currently an assistant coach at the Idaho Volleyball Club and studying in the Respiratory Care Program at BSU. She is one of our younger coaches but her long time experience in the system provides her with a depth of knowledge and the additional experience of being taught in our system as well. In 2017 she was an active contributor to the Verdant regional team as well.

I ran cross country, indoor track, and outdoor track at Amherst College in Amherst, MA where I graduated with a dual degree in 2008. In 2010 I received my first Master’s degree, Curriculum and Education, at the University of Mississippi. I taught 10th grade English for 3 years at a small high school in Mississippi and coached track and field and managed to train several state champions in the short time I was there. I took a position at university in Moscow, Russia in 2011 and began learning olympic lifting. In 2012 I began working on a Ph.D. in comparative literature at USC, during that time I travelled to Russian again to work on olympic lifting again. While in southern California I began to study CrossFit. I began in October of 2011 and qualified for the OC Throwdown a few months later. I trained at CrossFit Mean Streets and qualified individually for SoCal Regionals 2012, 2013, and 2014. In November of 2014 I founded Verdant CrossFit. We qualified for 2015 West Regionals and went to the CrossFit Games in 2015. In 2016 and 2017 we qualified for West Regionals as well. In February of 2017 I began staffing CrossFit Refinery and operating it under my training system.

Join Today

We get a lot of people that are interested in trying CrossFit for the first time. After many years of experience and many different iterations of first-timer on-boarding processes, we have found that one-on-one sessions work best for first timers! We have a core of 4 separate, 1-hour long “On Ramp” sessions that we want all our new members to go through. In each of these sessions, new students are paired up with one of our trainers. The trainer explains the gym, the equipment, the daily processes that occur in the gym, and takes each new student through the different blocks of our curriculum in each session. All of our On Ramp sessions build on each other and we review the previous movements at each meeting. Each On Ramp session costs $30 and that goes straight to your trainer. Your trainer will video all of the major movements that we go over so that you can see what your movements looks like. The trainer will break down your movements and provide personal commentary on these videos. We have found that this kind of immediate, personal, and detailed feedback is a very successful way for new members to kick off their CrossFit journey.
